MOSCOW – Russia is delivering a new nuclear powered submarine carrying 16 Bulava missiles nuclear warhead to a permanent base on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
According to a report by state news agency TASS, the submarine will start based at a permanent base on the Kamchatka Peninsula in August. The move comes at a time when Moscow is increasing its military presence in the Pacific.
The Generalissimo Suvorov submarine enters service in late 2022. It carries up to 16 Bulava missiles with nuclear warheads, where each missile can carry more than one nuclear warhead.
“The submarine Generalissimo Suvorov will make the inter-Navy transition from the Northern Fleet (in the Arctic) to the Pacific Fleet in August,” wrote the TASS news agency, citing a source close to the Russian military. /2023).
“Transitions will be made along the Northern Sea Route, including submerged,” the report continues.
Russia has stepped up defenses in the vast far east region that borders Asia-Pacific, accusing the United States of expanding its presence there and increasing security concerns in Japan and across the region.
Russian state media earlier reported that the Generalissimo Suvorov submarine was intended to support the Russian Pacific Fleet’s nuclear-powered submarine force at the Rybachiy submarine base on the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Generalissimo Suvorov is the sixth ship of the smaller and more stealthy Borei-class submarines. It will replace the previous generation of ballistic missile submarines.
