Russian Attack Wave Hits Ukrainian Military Facilities. PHOTOS/TASS
MOSCOW – Russia claimed its military had attacked the airbase Ukraine , Monday (29/5/2023). In a rare acknowledgment of damage to a military “target”, Ukraine said work was underway to restore the runway.
Ukraine also said five planes had been grounded in the western Khmelnitskiy region, although it did not name the site or sites. A large military airfield was located in the area before the war.
“At present, work is continuing to extinguish fires at fuel and lubricants storage facilities and ammunition,” the office of the governor of the Khmelnitskiy region said in a statement.
Russia’s state-owned RIA news agency quoted the Russian Defense Ministry as saying more than one air base was attacked. However, there was no confirmation from Ukraine of damage to other airbases.
This month, the Ukrainian capital was attacked for the 16th time. But, officials said, most of the drones and missiles fired overnight had been shot down and no targets had been hit in the morning.
The attack, which sent residents of Kiev running for cover in metro stations, was part of a new wave of Russian airstrikes this month. Russia’s onslaught comes as Ukraine, armed with new weapons from Western allies, is preparing to try to retake territory occupied by Russian troops.
“With these constant attacks, the enemy is trying to put the civilian population in deep psychological tension,” said Serhiy Popko, head of the city’s Military Administration.
The Ukrainian military said the attack on the port of Odesa had caused a fire and damaged infrastructure. However, Kiev did not specify whether the damage would threaten grain exports.
“A fire broke out in the infrastructure of the Odesa port as a result of the attack. The fire was quickly extinguished. Information on the extent of the damage is being updated,” the southern military command said on Facebook.
Russia said on Monday that the Black Sea grain deal would no longer be operational unless a United Nations agreement with Moscow to address barriers to Russian grain and fertilizer exports was fulfilled.
