MOSCOW – The team Russia targeting the town of Dnipro in Ukraine east. Russia fired 16 missiles and 20 combat drones to attack the city, said the Ukrainian army, Monday (22/5/2023).
As reported by AFP, attacks on troops and infrastructure were carried out by various types of Iranian-made Shahed missiles and drones. Ukraine said its air defenses had destroyed all the drones and four cruise missiles, without giving details.
Dnipro was a large city with almost a million inhabitants before the war. It was about 125 kilometers (78 mi) from the current front line. Officials said the scale of the attack was unprecedented.
“Today the whole Dnipro is not sleeping. There has been no such shooting since the start of the war,” mayor Borys Filatov wrote on Telegram.
Meanwhile regional governor Sergiy Lysak wrote on Telegram that Ukrainian troops had withstood attacks by “fascists, terrorists and subhumans.” He said that 15 drones had been shot down.
“A 25-year-old man was injured by a missile attack in one district and seven people were injured in another district including two women in their 50s and 70s,” he explained.
Ukraine’s emergency services posted footage of a fire station with the roof knocked off and the fire engine torn to pieces. It was also reported that one of its rescue personnel was injured, while three of its buildings and more than 20 pieces of equipment were destroyed.
Russian shelling at night against Ukraine has increased since early May, mainly targeting the Kiev region. Ukraine says its air defenses have been able to destroy most of the attack drones and missiles.
