Quentin Tarantino has an obvious penchant for violence and revenge tapes, but only if they’re like the ones he makes. This was expressed by the American filmmaker before the Cannes audience during his master class, in which, using as an example the film that inspired him to be a filmmaker, John Flint’s Rolling thunder (1977), he exposed themes that have been very present throughout throughout his filmography.
“Some people like musicals, others action, drama or comedies, I like violent films. It is a way of enjoying the stories. I am on the side of electrifying audiences,” said the director. The director, who has made a name for himself in Hollywood thanks to films like Violent Times (Pulp fiction), Inglourious Basterds, Kill Bill, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and his film debut in 1992, Perros de reserva, explained that, beyond dealing with moral issues, what annoys him is that these issues are addressed in a “dirty” way.
“What I can’t stand is that violence is badly done. I can’t stand that,” he said. Beyond the violence depicted on set, which he himself describes as “pretend and funny”, there is something that really disturbs him: killing animals in movies.s, an aspect that, he assures, is completely outside his narrative limits. “Something that you see a lot in European and Asian cinema is that they kill animals in movies. And that bothers me a lot. I don’t like to see or show real deaths, not even from insects“, he sentenced.

“I can put up with fictional violence because I know it’s just a group of kids having fun on set,” replied Julien Rejl, general delegate of the parallel section, the Directors’ Fortnight, who moderated the talk, to director Julien Rejl. Another thing that Tarantino said he opposes is making compromises in art. “If it’s not completely free, I don’t care“said Tarantino and said that he likes to see the same movies many times, because he has a collection of restored films in his house, which he invites friends, like Brad Pitt, to see a few times.
“The more time I give a film, the more things it gives me. Because you start to relate things and find more meanings, they are pieces that provoke”, he explained.

In the hour and a half of talk after the screening of Rolling thunder, there were references to other filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. “youEverybody wants them. And I love them too. But I hardly ever talk about them because I’m never going to go after the most popular girl in high school.. It is not mine. You may or may not like them, but no one will fight for an opinion that is not in their favor,” she said.
But there is a filmmaker who undoubtedly moves Quentin’s criticism and passion, and that is the director of Domino, Brian De Palma, whose way of moving the viewer he admires. “De Palma fascinates me because he unleashes true passions. It’s the complete opposite (to Spielberg and Scorsese). There are those who love it and those who hate it. I also think there is a very comical element to it. He has the gift of making audiences respond“, he pointed out. He keeps his new film a secret Unlike how he described in detail the shots and sequences of John Flint’s film and different films to which he referred and that have inspired him throughout his career, from what Tarantino did not want to talk about his next tape.
“Why I wanted to do it and what it is about is a long story, but they will have to wait to see it,” he said. Leaving the future of his film career on hold, which has earned him throughout his 31 years behind the camera awards such as the Oscars, the Golden Globes, the Palme d’Or and the BAFTAs, he also did not mention anything about his supposed retirement, and in the middle of a full room he said: “I will only say: ‘to be continue'”.
Outstanding debt balance
The director wanted to start his career in Cannes in the parallel section of the festival that was in charge of receiving him today: the Directors’ Fortnight, wish that had been pending until today, since the delegate, at the beginning of the 90s, did not select reserve Dogs. “However, today, here, that debt is settled,” said Julien Rejl, during one of the interventions of the day.
The Directors’ Fortnight screens films, documentaries and short films from all over the world, with the aim of discovering new talents. “I wanted to be there with all my might. The legend said that if your first film managed to be in this section, you would be discovered as a filmmaker.“Tarantino told the audience.
