The current generation of consoles is taking off after its rocky start and what is happening in important markets shows the preference and success that some of these systems are having. In America, it’s a fact that PlayStation 5 is already on the rise while Switch is living its last air, reasons both consoles claimed the top spot last month.

PS5 and Switch dominate the United States
The Circana analysis firm (via Mat Piscatella) presented the console sales report for April 2023 in the US and in general there is good news for the sector. To begin with, a 7% growth in hardware sales is reported compared to April 2022, which translates to $367 million dollars. In this regard, it is noted that it is the best April since 2020 when console sales reached $420 million.
As for what happened in each case, the PlayStation 5 was the best-selling console by dollar sales, while the Nintendo Switch was the best-selling by units. However, the tie is broken in favor of Sony since the PS5 is the best-selling console in dollars and units so far in 2023.

Unfortunately, there is no mention of what happened with Xbox Series X | S, so it is inferred that it was in third place and its sales continue to decline, a trend that had already been confirmed in reports from previous months. Taking this into account, the expectation is that Xbox will resume flight in the holiday season as long as the announcements in charge of creating the hype, during the days when it would be E3, engage the public.
Regarding the surprises of the reported month, Mat Piscatella pointed out that the momentum for Switch came from the Switch OLED edition of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, that’s counting the few days of April that it had on record, so the results May could be even better.
