The name Erick Thohir was mentioned as a potential figure who could become the 2024 Vice Presidential Candidate.
This was revealed by political observer Wasisto Raharjo Jati. He considered that if the SOE Minister was promoted to vice presidential candidate, he would be able to complete the needs of his presidential candidate pair (candidates), especially candidates with political backgrounds.
According to Wasisto, Erick was able to complete the needs of his presidential candidate pair to win the 2024 presidential election, because he has great potential to gain the votes of voters from certain segments such as young people and voters in regions who do not yet have a particular preference for a presidential candidate.
“To be able to win the presidential election, political parties must carefully and precisely select a vice presidential candidate, such as a presidential candidate with a political background will need a vice presidential candidate who has technocratic experience or has a certain segment of voters so they can support victory in the 2024 presidential election,” Wasisto said as quoted by ANTARA on Monday. The observer from the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) added that Erick is also a potential vice presidential candidate to be nominated in the 2024 presidential election because of his increasingly strong electability.
For example, in the Poltracking survey results for the April 9-15 2023 period, Erick’s electability as vice presidential candidate was in the highest position with a percentage of 17.1 percent.
Next, the survey results also show that if Erick is paired with the presidential candidate for the governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo or the Minister of Defense, Prabowo Subianto, he can increase the victory of the two figures in the 2024 presidential election.
According to Wasisto, Erick’s strong electability was influenced by his good performance while leading the Ministry of BUMN.
Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wasisto assessed that SOEs played an important role in economic recovery. With the breakthrough that Erick made at BUMN, this then made his name often covered by various mass media and received appreciation from the public.

Based on the schedule set by the Indonesian General Election Commission (KPU), the registration of the presidential and vice presidential candidates is scheduled to start on October 19 to November 25, 2023.
As stipulated in Law Number 7 of 2017 concerning General Elections (Election Law), the presidential and vice-presidential candidate pairs are proposed by political parties or coalitions of political parties participating in elections that meet the requirements of obtaining seats of at least 20 percent of the total seats in the DPR or obtaining 25 percent of the nationally valid votes in the previous parliamentary elections.
Currently, there are 575 seats in parliament so that the presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs in the 2024 presidential election must have the support of at least 115 seats in the DPR RI.
In addition, candidate pairs can also be nominated by political parties or a combination of political parties participating in the 2019 Election with a minimum total of 34,992,703 valid votes.
