This was undoubtedly a difficult week for Overwatch 2 fans. Blizzard Entertainment confirmed the cancellation of the original plans related to PvE modalities. The news made the community feel bad, and now the director of the free video game has come forward and provided a more extensive explanation of the reasons behind this controversial decision.
In a post on the official Blizzard blog, Aaron Keller, director of Overwatch 2, acknowledged the community’s anger and apologized to both players and developers. He also claimed that some fan claims about the cancellation of PvE modes are “inaccurate.”
The manager comments that the cooperative content was divided into 2 parts: the Story Missions and the Hero Missions (Hero Mode). The first ones will come to the game from season 6, while the second ones were the ones that were cancelled.

Story Missions are cooperative missions that feature a linear narrative that expands the story and take place on huge maps with new enemies and cinematics. Hero Missions allowed players to upgrade characters through progression trees to create a “deeply replayable” experience.
Although the concept of the Hero Missions was interesting and excited fans and developers alike, Aaron Keller acknowledged that the team was unable to execute it and meet expectations.

Aaron Keller Explains PvE Changes And Apologizes To Overwatch 2 Fans
The creative recalled that Overwatch was born from the ashes of Project Titan, a canceled MMO. He commented that, upon launch in 2016, “we weren’t as focused as we should be on a game that was a huge success.” Instead, they began to think about what the next step would be, so work began on the PvE part of the project.
“Things rarely go as planned in game development. We had a hard time finding our balance with the Hero Mission experience from the start. The scope grew, we were trying to do too many things at once and we lost focus. The team created some really cool stuff, including hero talents, new enemy units, and older versions of missions, but we were never able to put together all the necessary elements to deliver a polished and cohesive experience”; explained the manager.

The creative comments that, after the launch of the sequel, the plans for future seasons began to grow. They were unable to make all their ambitions fit with the strategy, so they had to remove the Hero Missions.
“This has been difficult for us, but as the director of this project, I have to do everything possible to make decisions that put the game and the community first, even when those decisions are disappointing (…) I would like to apologize to our players and with our team. I’m sorry,” said the director of Overwatch 2.
