One Piece is a fairly long series, with a really complex story, and with many characters that we have managed to fall in love with over the years, so much so that it is considered one of the best animes in history. If there is something for which this legendary story stands out, it is for the mysteries of the plot, and it is that these have managed to keep fans wanting to know more about the adventures of Luffy and company for years. Now we find ourselves at a time when many of these aforementioned mysteries are being resolved, among them the one that involves the death of a very important character for the history of the franchise.
To King Cobra we met him during the alabasta arc, turning out to be the king of this country that was on the verge of collapse because of Crocodile, the Sichibukai that Luffy would later defeat after a very interesting battle. At the time of him we were able to know little about him, but since he is the father of Vivi, a character that fans were very fond of, Cobra ended up becoming a character well remembered by many users.
Unfortunately, we were able to learn that after the arc of Mary Geoise that King Cobra was killed during this summit, and at first it was said that he was killed by Sabo, Luffy’s brother, and a high command of the revolutionary army. As many fans supposed, this was a ploy on the part of the World Government, and it is that, as we learned later, he was assassinated by the Gorosei, that is, the group of elders that governs the world of One Piece, although now is when we have know what the reason is.

This is why King Cobra was killed
As they have explained from Game Rant, there are several reasons behind the murder of the aforementioned King Cobra. To begin with, the first mistake this character made was asking for an audience with the aforementioned Gorosei, and that is that he wanted to know the truth behind the story of Queen Lili, the ruler of Alabasta at the time the World Government was formed.
This ruler was the only one out of all the countries that formed the government who decided not to become a Divine Dragon, and instead decided to continue ruling Alabasta instead of living in Mary Geoise. Unfortunately, on the journey back to her country, Lili passed away, and her brother ended up as the next ruler of the desert kingdom. This raised suspicions in Cobra’s mind, but it was not the reason behind this character’s murder.
Then, after not receiving any clear answer to his initial question, he decided to ask about the D. issue, this being one of the biggest mysteries within One Piece, for which it does not seem that we are going to have an answer in the short term. This question seems to have really bothered the Gorosei members, and since Cobra seemed to know quite a bit about the documents of the royal family of Alabastait was clear that he was going to be killed, but this was not the real reason.
All this happened after King Cobra’s audience with the Gorosei.
The real reason is that while Cobra and the Gorosei were still dealing with this issue, the most mysterious character in this franchise suddenly appeared, the one known as Im-sama, a very curious figure. You may wonder why his appearance is significant for this matter, and it is that we are talking about the one who seems to be the true ruler of the world, since he sits on the throne, but the problem is that in the face of the rest of the world he is known as the empty throne, because no one is supposed to be the king of this government.
Because of this, it seems to be an unwritten law that no one, beyond Gorosei himself, can see this character, let alone see him sit on this mentioned throne, something Cobra saw at that moment. For this reason, these mentioned elders they had the obligation to assassinate the then ruler of Alabastawho was unprotected since his guards had not been allowed to attend this hearing.
Im-sama is the one truly responsible for Cobra’s death.
To prevent panic from spreading, and cover up their own problems, the World Government decided to announce that it had been the revolutionary army that assassinated King Cobra, and that is that in this way they killed two birds with one stone, so to speak. Luckily, later we have been able to learn the truth behind this murder, for which we lost a character that we saw very little in the franchise, but which the fans were quite fond of due to his actions.
