The diversification of the Jalisco countryside in agricultural and livestock products is the key factor to have national leadership.

They see challenges in prices and sustainability
The Jalisco Agricultural Council highlighted the leadership of the State in the sector, but recognizes that there are challenges in various production chains.
Roberto de Alba Macías, president of the Jalisco Agricultural Council, explained that some sectors have seen a boom in international markets, they have been crops that have left a very important economic benefit for those who produce them, but now they face the challenge of falling prices. and in working for sustainability.
Alba highlighted that among the main sectors that have stood out the most in recent years are berries, avocado and agave, and they are precisely the ones that have now seen a drop in prices and environmental problems.
For example, the avocado sector faces the challenge of a drop in prices due to the arrival of more competitors in the market, such as Peru and Chile.
“They have made a saturation in the United States market and that is why the price has fallen in recent months and according to studies in the coming years and there will no longer be profits as there were three to five years ago,” he specified.
The same happens in berries, where Peruvian and Colombian producers have promoted planting in those countries that have made them the great competitors of Jalisco producers in the coming years.
In the case of the tequila agave, there has been a very important collapse for producers.
Last year the price of the plant was quoted at up to 34 pesos and currently it is sold for 20 pesos on average. In addition, the producers of this crop have been affected by intermediaries and hoarders, who sell directly to the tequila companies.
“The crops that have had the greatest push to become number one in Jalisco now have to see how they react and how it hits the producers not having a profitability as it was when they initially bet on it,” he concluded.
In terms of sustainability, the challenge for all these sectors is great since there are complaints about the deforestation they carried out to plant some crops such as avocados and berries.
