The story takes place during the religious persecution in Mexico that occurred from 1926 to 1929, when José Sánchez del Río, a 13-year-old teenager, the youngest son of one of the oldest and most respected families in his native Sahuayo, asks for his parents’ blessing to enlist in the federal Cristero army. of President Calles.
