The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom reveals that Link and Zelda are “in a loving relationship,” according to Zelda’s voice actress.
Nintendo has typically left Link and Zelda’s relationship up to player interpretation, giving the series’ two main characters only a limited amount of screen time together.
Now, voice actress Patricia Summersett has discussed her take on the character, after voicing Zelda in Breath of the Wild, Tears of the Kingdom, and the spinoff Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.
“As a voice actress, looking at the overall relationship between Link and Zelda over the years, I personally love the ambiguity and that if there’s something there, it’s up to us,” Soummersett told The Gamer.
The ending of Breath of the Wild sees Link and Zelda reunited, and together back on the road on a quest to continue helping Hyrule. Tears of the Kingdom begins some time later, with Link and Zelda beginning to explore beneath Hyrule Castle. What happened in the meantime, and how much time has passed, is left for players to find out.
It’s a jump in time that “dodges the end,” says Summersett.
“You always wonder what can happen that keeps the relationship going. There’s a tension to that, and this challenge to a definition is a really nice thing… I know they (Link and Zelda) have a relationship with each other, it’s active, there’s a lot of care and a lot of listening, and I love that.”
