MANHATTAN – The panel of judges at the civil trial in Manhattan decided on Tuesday (9/5/2023) that Donald Trump responsible for sexually assaulting a former American magazine columnist; E Jean Carroll, in the mid-1990s.
Trump, the former President of the United States (US), was ordered to pay compensation of USD 5 million (more than IDR 73.6 billion) to Carroll.
According to all nine judges, as reported by CNN, Wednesday (10/5/2023), Trump did not rape Carroll, but sexually assaulted her in the locker room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in the mid-1990s.
Trump is also alleged to have defamed Carroll by denying the incident took place after Carroll exposed it in 2019.
Carroll sued Trump under the Adult Survivor Act—a New York state law passed late last year—which gives victims of adult sexual assault and assault one year to file lawsuits against the perpetrator regardless of when the alleged abuse occurred.
During the first three days of the trial, Carroll painstakingly detailed and, at times graphic detail, her memories of the alleged assault, and rebuffed attempts by Trump’s attorneys to undermine her credibility.
Carroll, now 79, recalls meeting Trump at Bergdorf Goodman in the mid-1990s and agreeing to help him shop for a gift for a woman.
According to Carroll, she and Trump engaged in flirtatious banter while exploring various parts of the store.
But, Carroll continued, what started as a pleasant encounter quickly turned “absolutely dark” when Trump led her into her underwear locker room and closed the door behind her.
