With the aim of strengthening the yellow corn value chain in Mexico, the company Ingredion and the International Center for Maize and Wheat Improvement (CIMMYT) signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement to implement a pilot project for the production of yellow corn under sustainable practices. .
This effort, which takes advantage of CIMMYT’s scientific research and Ingredion’s drive to strengthen the Mexican countryside, focuses on supporting Mexican farmers in the adoption of practices that conserve the soil and optimize productive inputs.
“At Ingredion we believe that we must all contribute to promote sustainable and conservation practices, starting from our network of yellow corn suppliers, and extend these practices through sustainability indicators for the future scaling of the field in Mexico”, highlighted Leopoldo G. Horle, President and CEO of Ingredion Mexico. “The agreement with CIMMYT contemplates achieving a more sustainable field. The country has enormous growth potential and it is very important for everyone to collaborate, accompanying the producers in the country,” added Horle.
Climate change currently represents a challenge for global food production and, in Mexico, it is increasingly necessary to join efforts to minimize its effects on the production of key inputs such as corn. For this reason, strategic alliances are required that contribute to the country’s food security.
“In line with our strategy towards 2030 we are strengthening existing associations and participating in new alliances that contribute to transforming food systems. The vision and work shared with Ingredion for the sustainable production of yellow corn seeks to transform food systems focusing on strengthening the capacities of farmers to make the best decisions and be resilient in a context of climate change,” said Bram Govaerts, CIMMYT director general.
The agreement intends to consolidate the collaboration between Ingredion and CIMMYT, combining resources and actions to gradually increase the production of sustainable yellow maize in the fields of the spring-summer and autumn-winter cycle in two of the main producing regions of Mexico.
Thus, it seeks to take advantage of the full potential of water resources, both rainfed and in irrigation, improve the use of inputs such as seeds and fertilizers and provide training to producers to optimize their agronomic management and with it their profitability. With the participation of Ingredion as a leading company, farmers ensure the sale of their grain and have the possibility of building and consolidating more lasting business relationships.
CIMMYT will contribute with research, methodology, technical and scientific support to implement the yellow corn sustainable agriculture program, in addition to exhaustive support for producers who enter the project, in order to help consolidate, in the medium and long term. term, of a yellow corn agrifood chain in Mexico; resilient, competitive, profitable and sustainable.
