The International Heavy Metal Day began to be celebrated in honor of one of the highest representatives of the genre: Ronnie James Dio, member of bands like Black Sabbath, ELF and Rainbow.

James Dio passed away at the age of 67 on May 16, 2010.and for this reason that date for many has been marked on the calendar to honor his legacy by listening to heavy metal songs.
