For this reason, the National Institute for Transparency, Access to Information and Protection of Personal Data (Inai) warns about purchase risks during the Hot Sale.
Thus, for the tenth edition of the Hot Salethat will take place from May 29 to June 06, 2023he Henna issued a series of recommendations with the purpose of reducing risks or the improper treatment of personal data when buying on the Internet.
According to the Study of Expectations of Purchase of Hot Sale 2023, carried out by the Mexican Association of Online Sales (AMVO), seven out of 10 Internet users plan to purchase products and servicesfavoring the digital channel to consult and decide on their purchase, since 61 percent believe that they will find better promotions and discounts on the Internet, 55 percent believe that online there are greater payment facilities and 54 percent think that it represents a saving of time.
It is important to note that some sites Internet They request personal data, including financial data such as credit or debit card number, expiration date and security number. In case of home delivery of any purchase, name and address are also requested.
Even, on occasions, the consumer can find applications or portals that require a registration in which their personal information is requested, which is not necessary or essential for the acquisition of the good or service.
For this reason, the Inai reminds consumers that they have the right to exercise at any time the rights of Access, Rectification, Cancellation and Opposition (ARCO), so that businesses They are obliged to respect them and act in accordance with the principles and duties established by the regulations on the matter.
Remember that the purchase sites must make available to the owner of the personal data the Notice of Privacy, which details, among other points, the purpose for which the information collected will be used; as well as the mechanisms and means available for the owner to express his refusal for the treatment or transfer of his information.
To make a safe purchase during the Hot Sale it is recommended:
Know them personal data rights when providing them to commercial establishments or services. Read carefully the Notice of Privacy before providing personal data, to know who will be responsible for the processing of said data, the use and purposes that will be given to them; also review the terms and conditions of each website where purchases are made. Deliver personal data strictly necessary for the acquisition of the good or service of interest. Provide personal data once the company or person requesting it has been fully identified and know clearly the purposes for which they will be used. Avoid making purchases using connections to public Wi-Fi networks. If you have no other option, connect through a virtual private network (VPN), to protect the information exchanged between the device and the website. If purchases are made through mobile devices, verify that these have the minimum security measures, such as the password to unlock, and with the latest updates to the operating system and applications. Be sure that the Internet site where you browse or buy be trustworthy; For this, it must be checked that the electronic address begins with the figure of a closed padlock in green and the initials “https”, which guarantees that the shared information will be encrypted and cannot be seen by third parties. Observe carefully the information, appearance and details of the portal visited, to detect if it is a fake site. Once the information is provided, check if there is any field to authorize the use of personal data for marketing or advertising purposes. If the field is pre-marked and you do not want the data to be used for such purposes, modify the selection. Check account status and activate the bank alert service by email and/or cell phone, to corroborate bank movements. If you are a user of mobile banking applications, take advantage of the digital card tool, prior to the acquisition of any product or service over the Internet, in order to strengthen the protection of bank card information and reduce the risk of improper use of the same. Be wary of offers that make it conditional to provide your personal data, or to share attractive promotions among your contacts, by mail or a messaging service, as they could be scams.
