SEOUL – A dire situation was experienced flight Asiana Airlines was carrying hundreds of people when a passenger opened the door while the plane was still in the air, on Friday.
The rogue passenger has been arrested and faces up to 10 years in prison. The suspect, a man in his 30s, refused to explain his motives.
The Airbus A321-200 aircraft, carrying 194 passengers, departed from Jeju Island and was en route to Daegu International Airport.
Despite the horrific incident, all passengers survived, and the flight landed safely with the doors still open.
However, at least 12 people were injured, some of which included suffering from respiratory problems.
Local media reports said that as the plane descended, the mischievous passengers suddenly opened the emergency doors when the plane was only 250 meters from the ground.
The terrifying scene was caught on video by fellow passengers and shared on social media. Footage shows the left side of the plane with a visible crack and a row of seated passengers buffeted by strong winds.
The flight attendant was unable to restrain the male passenger because the plane was about to land.
Witnesses reported that the man attempted to jump out of the plane after opening the door.
