WASHINGTON – A chilling video showing the victims of the “tranq” drug epidemic in Philadelphia, United States of America circulating on the TikTok application.
The video shows the Kensington area – known for its drug open market – seen packed with drug users who are high and unconscious. The video was posted by the urbanvisuals2.0 account.
The chilling clip comes as the “City of Brother Love” grapples with increasing use of the drug Xylazine, or “tranq,” which is a lethal sedative used to enhance the effects of heroin, cocaine and fentanyl.
The drug is so potent that the White House recently declared it an “emerging threat.”
Dr Rahul Gupta, Director of the National Drug Control Policy Office, issued the warning last month.
Philadelphia health officials say the city has been badly affected by the drug epidemic.
“Xylazine has hit Philadelphia very hard, causing an increase in overdose deaths as well as severe injuries that can lead to sepsis and amputation,” the Philadelphia Department of Health and Board of Health said in a joint statement last month.
“As a result, the Philadelphia Department of Public Health has been working closely with partners across the city to address this new aspect of the drug overdose epidemic,” the statement continued.
Meanwhile, community aid workers say they have seen the drug’s profound effects firsthand.
