Today they premiered in HBO Max the first seven episodes of the first season of “Vgly”, a youth story that addresses the hunger for triumph of a group of friends who will face various circumstances in life, but without losing the flow. The story is led by Benny Emmanuel, Juan Daniel Treviño, Sasha González, Alex Lago and Jesica Viteamong others.
THE REPORTER had the opportunity to talk with the cast, as well as with the filmmakers of this series, where you can also see important figures in music such as Natanael Cano and Simpson Ahuevo. “It is a very cool series, the net a lot of band will be able to feel represented and reflected. It is the story of an urban artist who dreams of breaking it into music and together with his crew they are going to make their way in this artistic world ”says Benny Emmanuel, who precisely plays “Vgly”.
“It is a tragicomedy, they are going to have a good time, they are going to cry, there are also songs that were made specifically for the series, they are people who are really involved in the music. So, they know what they are talking about, as well as the writers.
Benny is very good at music, fully immersed in his role as an urban singer. “From the nose I liked to sing, in fact I started wanting to do it, I took singing classes, but later I gave it up because my role was acting. But this project is an incredible excuse to return to this passion. My preparation had to do with singing classes, listening to a lot of rap and out of nowhere doing exercises on these bases of rap to release words to be in that mood and in that flow”.
For Jessica Vite the experience was beautiful “in all aspects”, says. She also plays a singer who is making her way in music. “There are many passionate people doing her work, the truth is that it was a series made with a lot of love. They (the filmmakers) have been involved for a long time doing this with all their passion so that what they wanted was reflected, this is not a common series, it is an extraordinary series with a lot of connection”.
The crew in the plot, which Benny talks about, is made up of the characters from Sasha, Juan Daniel and Alex, the latter highlights that this series is a dream for him, “it makes us wonderful and happy to be able to tell this beautiful story.” Sasha is the one who represents the creative part in this team of young people, she knows visual aspects and will give her touch to “Vgly”, the star of this project. “For me it was a somewhat slow process, landing the ideas of my character with this creative part that he has and understanding him.but on the other hand it was a lot of fun giving life and a voice to these girls who have dreams, goals and families that embrace them”.
In that sense, john daniel He is also grateful for the opportunity to tell this story, being one of “Vgly’s” best friends and who somehow always tries to put his feet on the ground. “He is a character with whom I identify a lot, I was also that guy that my little group of friends had there in Monterrey. I have always been in associations and in independent, governmental, social prevention and housing support projects. So, I always looked for the best path for my people, for my family and my friends. And I feel like these characters live with this need to want to belong, to be somebody, to grow and stand out with their experience.”
santiago mirrorone of the filmmakers, points out that this story is about a group of kids who grow up in a neighborhood, “But they have a heart, a vision and a talent that they manage to carry, so they discover them and suddenly they explode and are world stars like Bad Bunny, Santa Fe Klan, El Alemán and all these characters. who are part of this. So, five or six years ago we were seeing a new phenomenon that didn’t exist before, more music from other countries was heard here and suddenly we were already listening to the music (of these stars) both in the strawberry clubs and in the markets and that It gave me a lot of idea that a new wave was coming”. He endorses that since then there has been a new Mexican nationalism “that is re-appreciating how badass we are.”
Arturo Sampson, producer of the project, shares that this is just a good time to premiere the series regarding the good run that Mexican music is having in the world. “I just hope that no candidate is going to start using the songs from ‘Vgly’ to promote themselves.”
Finally, Sebastian Sariñana, another of the filmmakers, expresses that in this series identification and empathy are important. “On the one hand, this series is aspirational, but in the sense that it inspires and in its heart it is a story about young people pursuing their dreams and who dare to do so in a place that is Mexico, which, as we know, can be a place that does not invite and does not support its young people to create art, that is why the Guerrero neighborhood was perfect to tell this story, it is in the center of the city, it has a lot of character. And also the sense of humor, more than being there to lighten up, is a fundamental part of the story, because it is also an important part of Mexican culture and how we face adversity. As a series, we also wanted to accept all this absurdity and surrealism that Mexico has and make it part of history.
