GAZA ROUTE – Gaza fighters fired rockets on Tuesday (2/5/2023) following the death of Palestinian Islamic Jihad figure Khader Adnan in Israeli custody.
Khader Adnan has been on a hunger strike for almost three months.
The cross-border rocket attack followed the death of Khader Adnan, who had been on a hunger strike since his detention by Israeli forces in the West Bank in February.
The Israeli prison service announced the death of a prisoner affiliated with Islamic Jihad, who “was found this morning in his cell unconscious.”
The news was quickly followed by rocket fire into Israel, according to an AFP journalist who witnessed the incident. The Israeli military reported three rockets “falling in an open area.”
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh said Adnan’s death was described as “deliberate murder” by Israel.
“By refusing his request for his release, medically ignoring him and keeping him in his cell, despite his serious health condition,” the Palestinian premier’s statement said.
Adnan, 45, is the first Palestinian to die as a direct result of a hunger strike, according to the Palestinian Prisoners’ Club.
“Other Palestinian prisoners have died as a result of attempts to force-feed them,” said the advocacy group’s director, Qaddura Faris.
