TEL AVIV – A former agent Mossad were among the four people who died after a houseboat chartered for vacation sank in Italy in a storm. This was confirmed by intelligence services Israel That.
The former agent was on a houseboat, with 22 other people, on a northern Italian lake near the town of Lisanza.
Two Italian intelligence agents and a Russian woman — part of the two-person crew — from the ship also died in the incident.
The Israeli prime minister’s office issued a statement on behalf of the Mossad saying the body of the unnamed agent had been returned to Israel for burial.
Previously, Israel’s Foreign Ministry had confirmed that a retired security forces officer was killed but did not give his name or age or provide details about his professional background.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said that due to work at the agency, further details could not be disclosed and extended condolences to his family.
Local police said on Tuesday they had no further information regarding the identities or professions of the other 19 survivors. Some managed to swim to shore, while others were picked up by other boats.
Italian media reported that a private plane had picked up other Israeli survivors and flown them out of Italy.
