Eight people were reported dead after torrential rains in northern Italy washed away river banks and caused devastating flooding. As a result of the flood, around 5,000 people had to be evacuated.
The mayor of the city of Cesena, in the Emilia-Romagna region, Enzo Lattuca, posted a video warning that continued heavy rains in the Emilia-Romagna region could again flood the river Savio and its smaller tributaries in a Facebook post.
He urged residents to move to the top floors of their homes and avoid river banks. He also announced the traffic closure of several bridges and roads after massive flooding forced rivers of mud to flow through the city.
“The situation could become critical again. We cannot in any way let down our guard,” Lattuca said, as quoted by Reuters, Wednesday (17/5/2023).
Civil Protection Minister Nello Musemeci confirmed that three people had died so far and about 5,000 people had been evacuated.
The agency’s deputy head, Titti Postiglione, said the rescue operation for those who needed emergency evacuation was extremely difficult given that so many roads and routes were flooded.
