Despite the fact that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has shipped in the millions of units and is a commercial success in every sense of the word, it is undeniable that many gamers are disenchanted with the current state of the franchise. Therefore, a group of fans got down to work to create their dream game. Unfortunately, the project came to an abrupt end.
In 2021, a team of independent developers started a project titled sm², a free mod that aimed to become the best game in Call of Duty history. Originally, it used the Modern Warfare 2 engine and intended to include all the weapons and maps from the classic titles.
The group worked on the game for 2 years, during which time they shared trailers showing the maps, weapons, and game modes available. The videos excited the community and put this ambitious project in the public eye. Unfortunately, the dream came to an end.

According to reports, this news comes shortly after the team responsible for the unofficial Call of Duty mod opted to change the graphics engine for “technical reasons.” It is unknown if this situation influenced Activision’s decision to shut down the project.
Unsurprisingly, the announcement came as a shock to fans who were looking forward to enjoying this title, which was a feast of nostalgia due to all the classic content that was gathered in one place. “Our hopes and dreams of seeing a Call of Duty game that has the best weapons, weapons, and features are sadly dead,” he claimed el youtuber M3RKMUS1C.
