Charles has been pre-called up by Belgium for the European Championship: it’s a showcase to get back up
From the World Cup with the Red Devils to the European Championship with the Under 21 little devils: this is the path that Charles De Ketelaere could follow. A downward trajectory or a way to catch up and try to get back into general consideration, in view of next season. The trend of the curve follows the Rossoneri’s fluctuations: Charles had arrived in Milan as a great promise from Bruges, back from a season as a true scorer (18 goals in 49 games), with the Belgian national team ready to offer him a leading role. The negative performance in Milan also influenced the then coach Martinez: in the winter world cup that should have consecrated him, De Ketelaere played only a quarter of an hour in the 2-0 defeat against Morocco in the group stage (beyond Belgium he did not go ). Charles returned to Milanello more gloomy than ever: even his second part of the Rossoneri season was completely devoid of flashes. He remained in the big national team also with the new German coach: 22 minutes in the luxury friendly against Germany last March.

After another few weeks in the shadows, it is difficult for the coach to call him to offer him the limelight of the European qualifiers: Belgium will be engaged in mid-June against Austria and Estonia. Easier, and there’s already a clear track, for Charles to follow his younger Under 21 teammates to the European Championship to be played between Romania and Georgia. Here his national team will meet Holland, Georgia and Portugal in the group stage. De Ketelaere, like Vranckx, is on the pre-called-up list, which has already arrived at the Rossoneri headquarters. He should be enthusiastic about responding to the call-up: the European Championship with the youngsters from Belgium could be a way to add a positive addendum (the category European Championship will be played at the end of the championship) to a season far below expectations . And there remains a great international showcase: Milan has no intention of selling Charles to the highest bidder but the assumption of (almost) all the other players applies to him: any interesting offers will be evaluated. Before that, however, a European exploit would make Pioli happy, who hopes to accompany him in a second AC Milan season full of satisfactions. With Leao and Tonali, immature at the start, he had worked great.
