BRUSSELS – Commander Czech Republic say the worst scenario of war between NATO with Russia it just might happen as the gulf between the West and Moscow widens amid the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine.
The chief of the General Staff of the Czech armed forces, General Karel Rehka, told a conference in the country’s parliament that NATO’s military must perform an important task of preparing for a direct conflict with Moscow, the Czech news agency iROZHLAS reported.
“We view war between Russia and the North Atlantic Alliance as a worst-case scenario, but not impossible,” Rehka said.
“It is possible, Russia is currently on the path to conflict with the Alliance,” he added as quoted from Newsweek, Wednesday (31/5/2023).
Rehka later told news agency Seznam Zprávy: “I definitely don’t want war”, describing a possible conflict with Russia as the “darkest scenario”.
“Nobody wants it at all, but it’s not impossible,” he added.
“It’s important to stop saying it’s impossible, because it’s very possible. It can happen and it’s necessary to prepare for it in the long term,” he said.
“But that doesn’t mean that Russia wants it or plans for it,” Rehka said.
“Of course not now, as much as we don’t want it. Everyone knew it would be a tragedy,” he added.
