At the end of Telecommunications Month, Subtel, the Municipality of Taltal and Movistar Chile, announced the new connectivity plan for rural and remote areas, called “Conectemos Chile”. There will be more than 140 thousand homes passed with the possibility of connecting to this technology, belonging to 55 communes of 11 regions of Chile. It should be noted that more than half of these communes will have fiber optics for the first time, which translates into significant progress in reducing gaps and developing digital inclusion.
The “Conectemos Chile” plan was announced by Claudio Araya, Undersecretary of Telecommunications; Guillermo Hidalgo, mayor of Taltal, and Andrea Torrejón, manager of Movistar Chile’s North Zonal Area.
The action took place at the Neighborhood Council No. 8 Gabriela Mistral, in the Taltal commune, Antofagasta Region, where fiber optic connectivity and also 5G were inaugurated for the first time. In the instance, a team of volunteers from Fundación Telefónica Movistar held a digital literacy workshop for older adults, who were trained in the use of smartphones, bill payment and video call communication.
During the instance, the Undersecretary of Telecommunications, Claudio Araya, pointed out that “a little over a year ago, from Subtel we are promoting the Zero Digital Gap Plan, which consists of all people in the country, regardless of where they live, have the ability to connect to the Internet. This means arriving with coverage, but also with digital tools so that people can take advantage of all the advantages that the digital world has. To accomplish this task, public-private work is essential and along these lines, initiatives such as this contribute enormously to reducing digital gaps, but above all, to improving people’s quality of life”.
The mayor of Taltal, Guillermo Hidalgo, stated for his part that “we are very happy that Movistar has considered Taltal with the Conectamos Chile plan, this absolutely benefits our families, and makes us at the forefront of communication technology. We are an extreme area with many needs and this helps us to achieve greater progress and well-being”.
Meanwhile, the manager of the North Zonal Area of Movistar Chile, Andrea Torrejón, explained that “today we are laying the first stone of the Conectamos Chile plan in Taltal, a commune that is marking a milestone at the regional level, starting this important project and connecting to both 5G like fiber optics. The latter is the enabling technology of technological transformation and digital inclusion, delivering various benefits, where the literacy that the elderly in this town are receiving today, hand in hand with Fundación Telefónica Movistar stands out”.
It should be noted that thanks to the Conectamos Chile plan, this year Movistar will add new 55 rural and remote localities connected to its fiber optic network, reaching nearly 80 benefited communes in total. In addition, it should be noted that 30 of these communes will be able to enjoy fiber optics for the first time, such as Taltal itself, Monte Patria, Huasco, Punitaqui, Salamanca, Tierra Amarilla, Diego de Almagro, among others.
