The number of car thefts is increasing, in Limburg you have the greatest chance that your car is gone if you wanted to go to work in the morning.
Look, there are more important things in your life than a car. Think about your health, friends, family or a roof over your head. But it’s still pretty annoying when your car is stolen. We pertrolheads see it more as just a means of transport, but even if you only use your car to get from A to B, a theft is just a shame.
Car stolen
People should just stay away from other people’s stuff. Point. But unfortunately that is not the reality. Research by Independer, which is based on data from the police and CBS, shows that there are more car thefts. In the first four months of 2023, almost 3,000 Dutch people were lost and their car was stolen. This is 6% higher than the year before and even 31% higher than two years earlier.
Thieves are particularly looking for Toyotas. One in six stolen cars belongs to the Japanese brand. Extra bad news is that Toyotas are also popular for catalytic converters: almost sixty percent of all stolen catalytic converters are stolen from models of this brand.
Regio
Cars are stolen in every region. But there are striking differences. Your beloved car is least safe in Limburg. Yes really! You would think it is in the Randstad, but nothing could be further from the truth. There are 8.3 thefts per 10,000 households. This is twice as high as the national average. It is of course an advantage for the crooks in Limburg that you can easily cross the border with a stolen car.
In Friesland you are in a much better position. It is safer there, in the first four months ‘only’ 0.5 vehicles were stolen per 10,000 households. It is also relatively safe in Zeeland with 0.7 vehicles. Incidentally, the national average is 3.7 thefts per 10,000 households.
Municipalities
Well, we end up at the Randstad after all. More than a quarter of all stolen motor vehicles are stolen in Rotterdam, The Hague and Amsterdam. But the greatest opportunity is not in a big city. No, that is in Beek in Limburg! No fewer than 19 vehicles are stolen here per 10,000 households.
Reason for this? No idea. Maybe you know, then let us know in the comments.
