Super Mario Bros. The Movie conquered the box office since its premiere in early April. Millions of people have already enjoyed it in theaters, but it is clear that many others want to see it from the comfort of their home. Rather than wait for a digital or physical release, they opted for piracy. The problem is that cheap could be expensive.
Beyond the extensive moral and legal debate that exists around piracy, this case raises concern because, according to reports, a Trojan virus has already affected millions of people thanks to illegal downloads of the Illuminarion and Nintendo animated film.

Through a new report, cybersecurity site ReasonLabs has revealed that it first identified the virus on April 30, shortly after a hacked version of Super Mario Bros. The Movie surfaced on Twitter. He explains that the same type of malware was used more than 150,000 times in other movies and software, but that in this case it could be more worrying due to the success of the feature film based on the gaming franchise.
Beyond ReasonLabs users, the researchers stated in their report that there are possibly millions of people affected by this Trojan virus worldwide.

Now, what are the negative repercussions of this malicious software? According to the information, it installs a web extension that modifies browser settings without user consent, allowing to change default search engine, display unwanted ads and generate revenue for attackers. It can also be used to steal sensitive data and passwords.
ReasonLabs states that because the extension was downloaded locally to the affected person’s computer, it is impossible to remove it from the Chrome Web Store. This limits Google’s ability to help users infected with the Trojan virus.
Of course, the recommendation is to buy and install an antivirus to protect the computer from any malicious software. However, the surest way to stay safe is to enjoy Super Mario Bros. The Movie in theaters or wait for the official physical and digital release.
