WASHINGTON – Messenger of anti-Semitism United States of America (US) and Israel engaged in a war of words about whether supporters or critics of Jewish financiers George Soros is an anti-Semite.
The war of words started when Twitter CEO, Elon Musk comparing Soros to a cartoon supervillain.
In a tweet on Monday, Musk said that Soros reminds him of Magneto, a mutant supremacist scientist from Marvel’s X-Men universe. When a commenter pointed out that Magneto was portrayed – like Soros – as a Holocaust survivor and the two had “good intentions”, Musk made his stance clear.
“You assumed it was good faith,” he wrote. “They don’t. He wants to erode the fabric of civilization. Soros hates humanity,” he added.
Musk was quickly accused of anti-Semitism, with Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt suggesting that by comparing the billionaire to Jewish supervillains, Musk would encourage extremists.
But the Israeli government did not agree.
“The Israeli government and most Israelis see Elon Musk as an outstanding entrepreneur and role model,” Israeli Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli tweeted on Thursday.
“Criticism of Soros – who financed the organization most hostile to the Jewish people and the state of Israel is in no way anti-Semitism, quite the opposite!” he added as quoted from Russia Today, Sunday (21/5/2023).
Soros has donated more than $32 billion to liberal political causes through his NGO Open Society Foundations, and was the largest donor in last year’s US midterms, giving $128 million to Democratic Party candidates and organizations.
