Alexander Fernandez he felt like he was in a game of chess when he decided to make the risky decision to change the musical genre of his career, from regional, which he had learned by tradition, to pop.
His father, Vicente Fernandezhe was already a consolidated singer in Mexican music when he decided to present it to the public, when ‘The foal’ he was five. At 18 she began a career in the same field that quickly took off to success, even when he admits that he always thought that, instead of a singer, he would be an actor, as was his father.
“I really liked movies, I liked it more than music. When I was little I saw myself more as an actor or maybe it wasn’t clear to me, but I always said ‘if I dedicated myself to something of this genre it would be more acting than singing’ “Alejandro confessed during an interview for the YouTube program of Yordi Rosado.
In one of his first albums, from 1995, called “May you be very happy”, the interpreter included the song “Like who loses a star”, which became the most popular song of the moment and a hymn for the genre, which continues to be applauded to this day. That success, recalls the also businessman, scared him too much, but it led him to take the path of pop.
“It was not easy,” he accepted. “It was something impressive, that is, it came on my second album and I was selling with that song just like my father, just like Julio Iglesias and the big artists of that time, at the same level and when success came to me with this song so soon The truth surprised me, I began to make ideas in my head and I did not know how to overcome that song with Mexican music, so what I did was the surprise factor,” he said.
Back then he appeared on his way emilio estefanwho was the most important music producer of the time. “They called him King Midas”, remember. Estefan offered to produce it and much to the regret of his father Alejandro accepted because On this occasion, he found the only way out to continue shining despite his rapid takeoff.
“Emilio Estefan, who was in his prime as a producer and I was given the opportunity to make a song with Gloria (Estefan) for the Olympic Games, I told him what was happening and he understood the whole concept and from there we started throwing a generation of music, of an evolution of regional Mexican music”.
Some of his successes in the genre are “I can’t forget”, “If you knew” and “I was born to love you”, which came on the following two albums; However, the singer affirms that he decided to soon resume his path in regional music due to a matter of age.
“After certain years I no longer saw myself in the pop genre because I do believe that it has a time limit and I was about to cross it, so I said: ‘I’m going to my chair’, my dad had already retired and I said ‘It’s time to sit down’, many artists were getting on the chair and I think it was the right time to arrive, slap the hand and put order,” he said.
Con “If I have known love” in 1999 resumed the regional one, which he consolidated with “Tantita Pena” on his album “Origins” from 2001. Over the weekend he appeared, like his father he did it in 1984before 50 thousand people in the Plaza de Toros México and although he assures that he will defend his place, he also accepts that new exponents arrive.
“There is an audience for everything, I don’t want to monopolize everything, among there are more people who take out regional Mexican music, it serves the genre,” he concluded.
