WASHINGTON – Having the ability to speak foreign languages for a president is a distinct advantage. Like several presidents of the United States (US) who have foreign language skills so they have excellent diplomatic skills.
By being able to speak and write foreign languages, US presidents can address and converse with foreign leaders in their language. That will break the ice and show intelligence in diplomacy in international relations.
Here are 7 US presidents who have foreign language skills.
1. Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)
Teddy Roosevelt spoke French, German and Latin. He kept many foreign language books in his library.
He is also able to speak fluently in German and French. This facilitated dialogue with the German and French leaders.
“Roosevelt’s French was grammatically correct, but sometimes difficult to understand,” said John Hay, secretary of state in Roosevelt’s cabinet.
2. Herbert Hoover (1929-1933)
Hoover’s wife, Lou, is a partner in learning the language. Together, they translated 16th century documents from Latin into English over several years.
