A developer at Epic Games has warned that the VRAM of GPUs will be crucial to enjoying current and future games. Although the new graphics engine Unreal Engine 5 will bring the true next-gen games, the limitations in GPU performance are already being felt due to the systematic saving in VRAM memory in the high-end GPU business.
An example is the recently released beta of the game Diablo IV, which with a 1080p resolution and all graphics settings set to maximum, already hits the ceiling on the 8 GB of VRAM of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti. If a 2023 game is already constrained by an 8GB GPU, you can imagine what could happen with more visually demanding games. Another example is the game Hogwarts Legacy at maximum quality and 4K resolution, which requires 13 GB of VRAM without Ray Tracing and 15 GB with it enabled. This makes a high-end GPU with 16 GB of memory mandatory.
in a brief interview, the developer of Epic Games recommended having a GPU with at least 10 or 12 GB of memory. While consoles have 16GB of memory for the entire system, all games are being optimized to take up 10-12GB of memory on PC. While there is no limit to memory on PCs, current high-end NVIDIA GPUs only offer 8-12GB of memory. The Unreal Engine 5 is designed to deal with at least 12 GB of VRAM.
The future NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070, which will debut on April 13 at $600, offering just 12GB of memory. So one thinks whether or not it will be worth buying a GPU of this type, its useful life will be in danger. Experts recommend 16 GB as input to ensure optimal performance in the most demanding games, although this will not help if there is a memory limitation. The one that can suffer with this generational leap is the GeForce RTX 4060, which with only 8 GB of memory its performance will be diminished when Unreal Engine 5 arrives, its purchase is not recommended.
