BEIJING – The heartbreaking story of a woman with the name “Xiaohuamei” has caused a stir China . He was a victim of human trafficking who was found locked up with his neck chained like a pet.
Xiaohuamei was sold as a bride and forced to produce eight children.
This case was uncovered last year by a vlogger who recorded Xiaohuamei’s condition in a video. Now, as quoted by AFP, Monday (10/4/2023), six people have been jailed for this human trafficking case.
The woman in her 40s was found locked up in a dirt-floor hut in a remote village. Just then, his neck was entangled with an iron chain.
Chinese courts ordered those who sold the women to jail for between eight and 13 years.
The woman’s husband, Dong Zhimin, was imprisoned for nine years due to torture. This sentence was handed down by a court in Xuzhou, a city near Shanghai.
Authorities said Xiaohuamei was abducted from his village in Yunnan, about 2,000 km from where he was found.
She was later sold several times, including once in 1998 for 5,000 yuan, before being forced to marry Dong, with whom Xiaohuamei was forced to produce eight children.
The case caused enormous public outcry in China and sparked debate about the status of women in the country.
