WASHINGTON – The team United States of America (US) managed to assassinate a senior leader ISIS in an attack on Syria northwest on Monday. This was disclosed by the US Central Command (CENTCOM).
The US military identified the leader as Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad Al-Jabouri. He is said to be responsible for planning attacks on Europe and Turkey, as well as developing the ISIS leadership network.
“The death of Khalid ‘Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri will temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plan external attacks,” said a release from CENTCOM.
Even so, according to CENTCOM Commander General Erik Kurilla, ISIS is still a serious threat.
“Despite being relegated, the group can still conduct operations in the region with a view to striking outside the Middle East,” Kurilla said in a statement.
The US has about 900 troops in Syria as part of its efforts to defeat ISIS in the region. In recent years American troops have killed or captured several ISIS leaders in the country.
In early February, President Joe Biden approved a daring ground attack in northeastern Syria that killed the global leader of ISIS, known as Haji Abdullah. On February 16, four US soldiers and a guard dog were injured in another attack when their target, a senior leader of the Islamic State group who was killed in the operation, set off an explosion, according to officials.
While US troops are in Syria primarily to fight ISIS, they are also under constant attack by what the Pentagon describes as an Iran-backed militant group. An attack late last month by these groups killed one American contractor, injured another, and injured at least 12 service members, according to defense officials.
According to Kurilla, there have been nearly 80 such attacks on bases housing US troops in Syria since 2021.
