He took over the club in 1986. The memory of Ranieri, the coach of the double promotion: “Tonino and his family welcomed me as one of their own”
The former president of Cagliari Tonino Orrù, patron of the Sardinian club from 1987 to 1991, died in the night at the age of 85. Born in 1938, Orrù had taken over Cagliari Calcio in 1986 together with four other entrepreneurs (Gianni Simonetti, Carlo Cogliolo, Vinicio Sarritzu and Ubaldo Caria), with the leading figure of Gigi Riva nominated as president.

In 1987 the Orrù family took over the entire corporate structure, with Tonino as president for four seasons. Not easy years for the club that avoided relegation to C2 by just one point in 1987-88. But there were also the following years characterized by the feat signed by Claudio Ranieri, with the double promotion and the return to Serie A. And the Roman coach, who returned to Sardinia this year to bring the rossoblù back from B to A, reminded him with emotion: “President Tonino and all his family had welcomed me as one of their own, we were and are very united. Their pain is mine too. – the words of mister Ranieri – There are many affectionate memories that bind us and they will never be forgotten. I think the fans also remember him with great esteem and gratitude, just as I do.” The club, the patron Tommaso Giulini and all the island fans in these hours are gathering around the family and in memory of one of the presidents who made the history of Cagliari.
