The Super Mario Bros. movie has broken the record for the biggest opening for an animated film in history, grossing $377 million worldwide in its first five days. With its release on April 5, it has surpassed the previous record set by Frozen 2 and 2019.
In the United States the film was expected to gross $125 million in 4,343 theaters in its first five days. However, it has far exceeded these expectations by reaching $204.6 million. Over the weekend, Super Mario Bros. grossed $143 million, making it the third-highest opening on an Easter weekend and the second-highest opening for an animated film, behind only Incredibles 2 (2018).
Additionally, the film has broken all box office records for video game adaptations, nearly doubling the $72.1 million US record set by Sonic 2: The Movie. Globally, it has also surpassed the $210 million record set by Warcraft: Origin in 2016, to become the highest-grossing animated film since the start of the pandemic.
But to be number 1, Super Mario Bros. must exceed the 939 million dollars raised by Minions: The origin of Gru (2022), also from Illumination Studios. Featuring an all-star voice cast including Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and Fred Armisen, the worldwide success of the film is due in large part to the humor and to the tribute to the original video game.
