Ahead of the official launch, the three-time Pikes Peak winner rides it in an onboard video posted on KTM’s YouTube channel
April 3, 2023
It will be presented on April 24, but the KTM 890 SMT has been growing curiosity around its next novelty for a few months now. To… keep us on our toes and show us what the Super Moto Tourer put it on the hands of Chris Fillmore, victorious three times in an easy competition as easy as the Pikes Peak (from 2107 to 2019, the last year of the “race to the clouds” dispute, with the KTM 450 SX‐F Factory Edition, 790 Duke e Super Duke 1290 R): unfortunately the video teaser it’s a few seconds onboard but Chris’s comment on the exhilarating driving qualities of the 890 SMT makes us want to try it soon.
Other previews will be available on April 11th, but by now we have more or less clear what the SMT will be like thanks also to the photos of the clay studio version: if everything is confirmed, the final version that we will see in about twenty days will keep the high front mudguard, but obviously it will mount 17″ rims inches. It also seems that the tank is not placed at the bottom, as in the Adventure 890, but that it will have a traditional location.
On the engine it seems reasonable to hypothesize the use of899 cc parallel twin (in which power configuration? If that of the 890 Duke R were adopted, we would be on 121 cavalli…), but it would not be entirely out of place to also think that the recent patents that anticipate a 990 engine could find application on the Super Moto Tourer. We look forward to April 11 to find out more!
