The MTV’s Movie Awards 2023 have already presented their nominations for their different categories, including those that award the best kiss, a category that is usually involved with rare nominations and winners, and this year will not be the exception, since one of the nominees for the award comes from The Last of Us, and not for a classic kiss scene as one might expectbut one that could be classified as disturbing at least.
In particular, the kiss that earned her nomination for the series occurs in the second chapter of the HBO series, in which Tess sacrifices herself so that Ellie and Joel can escape, leaving her at the mercy of the zombies and ending the scene with a “kiss” from Tess with one of the infected who seeks to spread his fungi while trying to exploit the place, which results in a tense and grotesque scene, but which seeks to show another perspective of the contagion according to the creators.
Despite maintaining human features, the infected must not be very pleasant to kiss.
In an interview with Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin for Variety, they explain that the idea arose from a thought about the behavior of the infected: “If the point is to spread the fungus, why do they need to be violent? we landed on that They do not do it. They are violent because we resist”. Under this premise, they sought to create a scene that would show what would happen if a person peacefully gives in to the contagion of the fungus while trying to make the barrels of gasoline explode, leaving as a result a disturbing scene with romantic traits that only increase the horror and the tension of the spectator in front of the act.
Anna Torv manages to convey the discomfort of the moment with her eyes
It’s a remarkable combination of Neil’s directing, Anna Torv’s acting when there’s obviously nothing there, and our visual effects department doing this magnificent job to make it all fit together and feel real and terrible.
Druckmann and Mazin credit the visual effects team and Anna Torv’s (Tess) performance in the scene, in which really kisses the air but goes totally unnoticed. We’ll find out if this scene wins best kiss on May 7, when the disturbing moment will compete against My Police man, Outer Banks, Daisy Jones and the Six, and Only murderers in the building.
