Rizieq Shihab, the former leader of the Islamic Defenders Front or FPI, seems to have a wise solution for addressing the differences in setting Eid al-Fitr in Indonesia in 2023.
As previously announced, the Ministry of Religion on Thursday (20/4/2023) has announced that Eid al-Fitr 2023 or 1 Shawwal 1444 Hijri will fall on Saturday 22 April.
While Muhammadiyah has long ago determined that this year’s Eid al-Fitr will fall on Friday April 21 today.
In his lecture which was uploaded to the Islamic Brotherhood Television (IBTV) Youtube channel and premiered on Wednesday (19/4/2023), Habib Rizieq offered a solution to the problem of differences in the determination of Eid al-Fitr.
“For the congregation, board members and sympathizers of the Islamic Brotherhood Front, I suggest. If tomorrow night we see the moon – we see the moon, there are witnesses, there is a moon visible – please don’t fast on Friday,” explained Rizieq Shihab.
“But if the government announces it on Saturday (Eid al-Fitr), we break the fast on Friday, Eid will remain on Saturday. Takbir will follow Saturday night, Eid prayers will follow Saturday, Eid will be busy on Saturday. So people are not confused,” he continued.
He then gave examples to prevent misunderstandings.
“For example tomorrow I see the moon, meaning Friday Eid. So Friday I don’t fast. Because if I’m sure I see the moon, I’m forbidden to fast, brother,” he explained.
“But I don’t have takbiran Friday night. On Friday I don’t hold Eid prayers. On Friday I don’t go anywhere,” he continued.
“Our takbiran night together with others. Id prayers together, Eid together. Is it safe or not? Calm or not? No need to make a fuss,” he continued.
However, Habib Rizieq emphasized that he was still waiting for a decision from the government regarding Eid Al-Fitr.
“The decision will depend on the rukyat tomorrow,” said Rizieq.
Previously, in the same lecture, Habib Rizieq Shihab said that Muslims should follow the stipulations from the government regarding Eid so they would not be confused.
However, he also asked Muslims and the government to respect differences in setting Eid al-Fitr or 1 Shawwal among Muslims in Indonesia.
On Thursday (20/4/2023), lawyer Habib Rizieq told Suara.com confirmed that the cleric would follow the government in determining Eid al-Fitr.
“He was praying the id prayer following the government’s announcement,” said Aziz Yanuar via WhatsApp message to Suara.com.
