The Super Mario movie continues to demonstrate its success at the box office with numbers that do not stop rising. After marking the best opening for a movie by Illumination, the studio behind Despicable Me and Minions, Nintendo’s flagship plumber movie has already broken all expectations in the figures collected and has already reached 500 million dollars raised, becoming the highest grossing video game adaptation of all time.
To achieve this milestone, the Super Mario movie had to break the record set by the Detective Pikachu movie, a movie that grossed $449,762,638 in total, a figure it was rapidly approaching and eventually breaking. In addition to this, the goal of reaching 500 million dollars, which was presumed to be achieved in the coming days, makes it the best release of the yearbeating out Marvel’s Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, which, by Box Office Mojo numbers, was the only 2023 movie to beat the plumber before Variety’s update.
This is how the list looked on April 13, now we have to wait for the update
This success will allow the expansion of the Super Mario universe to continue to adapt more references from the video game saga, and possibly open up the possibilities for movies based on other Nintendo titles. At the moment, Chris Pratt already spoke about the existence of a possible prequel based on what is shown in the post credits scenesso the figures shown in the film would make these comments come true.
Before the update, this was the last data on the tape
Super Mario Bros achieved 96% approval from the audience with more than 10,000 opinions, breaking the bad start it had with the critics who closed at 58% approval. Now it only remains to see how the numbers of the film continue to grow and wait for this success to allow more productions from the universe of the favorite video game plumber.
