MOSCOW – Russia is assembling tank killer groups that will counter the modern armor provided to Kiev by its Western backers.
The move was revealed by a senior Russian defense official in an interview released on Sunday (9/4/2023).
Speaking to Zvezda TV channel, Evgeny Arifulin, who heads a military training center located not far from Nizhny Novgorod in central Russia, said the order to create the unit had been issued by Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov.
The Russian military then developed an “instructional guideline” to achieve that goal, which was implemented at the training ground, he said.
“This is a large-scale systemic work carried out at the state level,” said the military official.
Arifulin explained that apart from “tank hunters”, the facility also trains service members in several fields, teaching them how to fire from artillery or operate various missile systems.
The facility can instruct as many as 700 soldiers at a time, according to the official.
With a focus on dealing with Western armor, Arifulin noted that the Russian military has studied all of these tanks, including the American M1 Abrams, German Leopard, British Challenger and French Leclerc.
“We know all their strengths and weaknesses and train personnel (to fight them),” he said.
