The map of fear, the new series by El Torres for Karras introduces us to the world of secrets and terrors hidden in our cities. And it streams it directly to the world!
When television reigned supreme in the lives of the Spanish and El mapa del miedo was the program that burst audiences. Today, in the age of the internet and streaming, it will be reborn at the hands of its creator and a group of young stars. Secrets and mysteries, monsters, ghosts, personal crises, drama and terror in a new format! What this group of future stars don’t know is that they are entering a dangerous world in which there is more than one side. The fights for views and the counterattack of traditional television will join the supernatural in the new comic by El Torres.
The map of fear is a different work within the work of El Torres. The man from Malaga is known for his great horror works and for his current foray into the universe of Robert E. Howard with a trilogy from which one installment is still missing. But this time we find an adventure closer to Stranger Things or the Goonies than to Hammer and the gothic terror of Poe, Le Fanu or Blackwood to which we are more accustomed. Accompanied by Jorge Iglesias, he has developed a more youthful work that adults can enjoy.
The story of The Map of Fear
The story begins in medias res, with a group of young people investigating the appearance of the Santa Compaña in the Madrid metro. Yes, the legend of the ghostly procession has its origin a little further north of central Spain, and that is one of the mysteries to be solved. In their confrontation they have the guidance of the creator of the original television program The map of fear that has united them to resurrect the format, and that may cost them more than the fame and money they can earn.
The history of El Torres e Iglesias is one of many conflicts. That of young people and adults, the current technological world with the ancient power of primal myths. Traditional media versus digital. That of love against the truth, all recreated through a group of characters worked and presented in a simple and direct way, allowing the narrative to flow freely despite their large number.
This first installment shines for its freshness when it comes to telling many things without being dense and letting the situation and the characters dominate the narrative. Sexuality and new genres appear without debates or predicaments. It is a reality that is here and that it appears is nothing more than an aspect of the characters such as their desires and expectations.
Eager to act as storytellers for young people, the couple of writers do not get carried away by anything other than adventure. The enjoyment of the reader is the most important. The sensation of being in front of an episode of Scooby Doo, Buffy or Stranger Things, make smiles appear in the middle of reading while the shady secrets of the Spanish supernatural world are discovered.
Because the mysteries without Iberians. We have already named the Santa Compaña and it is the perfect example to make it clear that what we are going to see are our myths and legends. Our ghost stories haunted by people who might live next door.
The drawing
The art of the work is carried out by Pablo M. Collar, with a modern style, with influences from Japanese manga and cartoons, leaving a dynamic work with a clear line and a canonical composition that speeds up reading. The character and environment designs are very specific and show the values of each one in a very defined way. Whether they are the heroes, the monsters or those antagonists who live half in the shadows. The real environments, it is Madrid after all, are recognizable but with a new twist. Above all, in this, it supports a highly worked color by Bea Gutiérrez that not only serves as a complement, but also adds to the sensations and the strength of the narrative.
The reader who is not a regular at the Cinemascomics comics section will not know. But what is for El Torres on this website is true devotion. And we have never been disappointed. Wherever it leaves its mark, it can be assured that there will be a good story (if not wonderful, as we have been accustomed to lately) and The Map of Fear adds to that saga of great comics.
