A thousand Swiss supporters are unable to go to Nice for the Conference match (forbidden to visiting spectators) and choose to follow the match just a stone’s throw from the Ariston. But before leaving…
There were 19 coaches on their way to Nice to support Basel in the second leg of the Conference League quarter-finals. They were rejected at the border (the Swiss club didn’t take it well), because the French judges closed the entrances to the Swiss for the race and they chose Sanremo to follow the challenge… remotely. And in the end, it was a party.
The party
—
On a giant screen in Piazza Borea d’Olmo, a stone’s throw from the Ariston theater, the Basel fans have transformed the center of Sanremo into a curve. There were a thousand of them, first they enjoyed an afternoon around the city (with a peak of drinks), then in the evening they set up a giant screen and finally celebrated the 2-1 victory (Basel will face Fiorentina in the semifinals) . Rivers of beer, then a procession up to Via Matteotti, singing choirs and showing scarves and flags in front of the Ariston theater. But before reaching the coaches parked on the seafront, behind the old railway station, they cleaned up the whole square (“Even from dog droppings” the residents recognized).
Under the eyes of the police and carabinieri order service who, for once, only stood by and watched. And the club thanked everyone yesterday: “Dangge Sanremo: FC Basel 1893 takes this opportunity to sincerely thank the city of Sanremo for welcoming our fans in such a hospitable way yesterday. Thank you very much!”. With handshake.
