The new SMT has just been presented: it has an 890 cc engine with 105 horsepower and 100 Nm of torque, WP APEX suspension and weighs 194 in running order, but above all it has all the KTM racing DNA. Here are the features and the price

He doesn’t mince words, he doesn’t make too many compromises and basically we didn’t expect him with a different nature from the one shown in his debut: the nuova KTM SMT 890 just unveiled in a press release by the Austrian manufacturer, it is a bike that since its link with the three-time Pikes Peak winner Chris Fillmore proudly displays its racing DNA.
To understand: Fillmore has competed in the AMA Superbike with the KTM RC 8 and is 2020 AMA Supermoto champion. For KTM he heads the North American activities in the Road Racing and Flat Track Factory sectors. but his palmares includes three victories at Pikes Peakfrom 2107 to 2019, the last year of the “race to the clouds” dispute, with the KTM 450 SX‐F Factory Edition, 790 Duke e Super Duke 1290 R: three bikes whose qualities the new KTM 890 SMT wants to somehow synthesize in terms of lightness, performance and “fun factor”.
As we had shown since the announcement a few months ago, the new SMT 890 appears to derive from the Adventure 890 R platform and from the LC8c engine but shows its strong personality. The same personality that over 15 years ago showed the 990 SMT which however over time had seen some formidable competitors in the house in the Adventure and Duke; the last born brings the name SMT back to the attention of the market, starting from the Adventure 890 R as a base, drawing its versatile character but enriching it with the asphalt qualities of the 890 Duke Rdefinitely a nice mix that we can’t wait to put to the test.
The engine is therefore the known LC8cfour-valve parallel twin with 75° valve timing from 105 horses at 8,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 100 Nm to 6.500; powered by two 46mm diameter Dell’Orto throttle bodies, it also stands out for 20% more rotating masses than the 790 which – claims KTM – helps in cornering stability without compromising the bike’s agility. The engine is also a stressed element of the chassis, centered on the Cro-Mo steel frame, with a geometry similar to that of the 890 Adventure R, with a wheelbase of 1,502 mm and characterized by a longer swingarm than its ADV sister and by the monoshock inclined, to bring the saddle height to 860 mm.
The braking system is made up of a triad of discs: 320 mm and radially mounted calipers with 4 pistons on the front for the front pair and 260 mm with two piston calipers on the rear wheel, are assisted by ABS Bosch 9.3 MP con Cornering ABS e SUPERMOTO ABS for those wishing to use the sliding and drifting repertoire of the Supermotard world.
The suspensions see the WP APEX at work: a 43mm USD fork with 180mm of traveladjustable in compression and hydraulic rebound (divided by rod), while at the rear there is a single shock absorber with adjustable compression and rebound, for a wheel stroke of 180 mm. For the original equipment tyres, the choice fell on the sporty Michelin PowerGP tires fitted to 17-inch alloy wheels in 120/70 and 180/55 sizes. the curb weight is equal to 194 kg.
The ergonomics see the intervention of a new and smaller 15.8-litre tank to obtain a more welcoming riding position, thanks also to the possibility of moving the handlebars forwards or backwards by 30 mm by adjusting the risers.
New KTM 890 SMT! The return of the SuperMoto Tourer
Are present three standard riding modes (RAIN, STREET and SPORT), which can be combined with the optional TRACK mode, which allows the rider to select the throttle response and traction control on 3 and 10 different levels respectively. Traction Control, as well as ABS Cornering, are managed by one 6D inertial platform.
Regarding the endowment, we find a dashboard TFT da 5″ which is not only the interface for electronic settings and vehicle information but can be integrated with the KTMconnect App: an application that can be downloaded onto a smart device and then synchronized with the bike, from which you can also manage – for example – TURN-BY-TURN+ navigation, make and receive calls, listen to music, access a Service Centre, track maintenance intervals, note maintenance actions and consult the motorcycle manual. The plant of lighting is LED while we find the heated grips optional.
For those who want the best, the equipment can be further enriched through the Power Parts where we find the QUICKSHIFTER+, the possibility of installing the software for regulating the engine torque during the release phase (MSR) and the Cruise Control; the electronic packages TRACK PACK and the TECH PACK are also available.
