RIYADH – Arab Saudi has carried out the largest evacuation of Sudan since the start of its operations when a ship carrying 20 citizens of the Gulf Kingdom and 1,866 other nationals arrived in Jeddah on Saturday local time.
The new wave of arrivals brings the number of refugees since the start of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s mission to 4,879 people, consisting of 139 Saudi nationals and 4,738 nationals from other countries including Australia, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Rwanda and Egypt, reported the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
UN staff were also among those evacuated from Sudan on Saturday.
“The kingdom is working to provide all the necessities that foreign nationals need in preparation for facilitating their departure to their country,” the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement as quoted by Arab News, Sunday (30/4/2023).
The UN representative spoke to Arab News, to once again thank the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia for its efforts in the evacuation programme.
Meanwhile, heavy fighting in Sudan has entered its third week after warplanes in bombing raids sparked anti-aircraft fire over Khartoum on Saturday, breaking a new truce.
More than 500 people have been killed since fighting erupted on April 15 between troops of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and number two Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
