Those are some bold statements from Felipe Massa…
Do we remember November 2, 2008? The last race of the Formula 1 season, in Brazil. Felipe Massa had the chance to become world champion for the first time in his own country in his Ferrari. He only had to win the race and Hamilton had to finish 6th or lower.
The first one worked brilliantly, Felipe won and until the last corner Hamilton was still sixth. Until Timo Glock suddenly went wide and Lewis was able to pass. Finished fifth in the end, giving him just enough points to become world champion. Sour for Massa, but deserved by Hamilton. Would you think.
But Felipe Massa doesn’t think so. He thinks he has been robbed and still wants the title.
Felipe Massa wants the season examined
And not even that last race in Brazil, but he wants to investigate the course of events surrounding that year’s Singapore Grand Prix. Nelson Piquet Jr. then crashed on the fourteenth lap, just after teammate Fernando Alonso came into the pits.
As it turned out, Piquet had deliberately drilled his car into the wall, which was what team boss Flavio Briatore and engineer Pat Symonds had to do. This brought a safety car into the track and allowed Alonso to hold his position. Massa, on the other hand, had a hell of a pit stop in which he even dragged the petrol hose with him.
Felipe Massa stripped of title?
Actually, the result of the race should not have counted. That is what several parties say, including the bosses of the FIA and Formula 1 at the time. They just decided not to do anything about the result, for fear that the good name of Formula 1 would be thrown into the dust.
And the latter goes against Felipe Massa’s chest. The board knew that the race had been manipulated, but did nothing about it. If the results of this race would not count, Massa would simply have had the title with five points ahead of Hamilton.
Massa realizes that it will be a difficult story, but wants it to be investigated on the basis of these facts. He is the man who has lost the most, says Felipe himself. And if it succeeds, Massa will go to 1 title, but more importantly, Hamilton will drop to 6 titles.
