Recently, a Colombian government account on Twitter sparked a heated discussion after a post that many people labeled homophobic went viral. The interesting thing is that this controversy is related, in a way, to the world of video games and movies. What happened?
The account of the Ministry of the Interior of Colombia reacted to a post about Super Mario Bros. The Movie. The problem is that the official profile of the government institution answered with irony and said that “I hope Luigi is gay”, with a homophobic term in between. The post went viral and of course caused controversy due to the generally pejorative nature of the word used.

The Ministry of the Interior of Colombia in the eye of the hurricane for commenting on Super Mario Bros. The Movie
The Colombian Ministry of the Interior deleted the tweet and acknowledged that the term used was not correct. “We know it wasn’t the words, but we are aware that homophobia kills. That is why we are in favor of all initiatives that make the LGBTIQ+ population visible and we work so that their rights are guaranteed”, reads the statement.
So what happened? The community manager responsible for managing the Colombian organization’s profile on Twitter forgot to switch to his personal account when he gave his opinion on Super Mario Bros. The Movie. Certainly, an error that can happen to anyone, but in this case it has a greater step as it is a government institution.

Now, is the community manager homophobic? Many users asked this question because of the offensive term that was used in the post. Laura Gabriela Gil Savastano, a former official of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, spoke about it in her personal account and stated that, in fact, it is quite the opposite.

“The CM of the Ministry is an LGTBI activist and reacted to a homophobic trill that suggested that the success of the question (film) was due to the absence of LGTBI figures. Perhaps out of anger, the CM got the wrong account. He thought he was answering from his personal account and answered ironically, ”said the former official.
Immediately, Laura Gil affirmed that the debate on the scope and connotation of a term considered offensive to the LGBT movement corresponds precisely to the members of this group. “In any case, we all make mistakes. And to all of us who expose ourselves on this network, claims have been made to us. The important thing is to correct and move on ”, she concluded.
