Air Europa pilots will go on strike on days May 1, 2, 4 and 5, as long as an agreement between the unions and the company is not reached beforehand. The decision comes after the failure of some negotiations in which a new collective agreement is being played.
The break comes halfway between the May Bridge and Mother’s Day. The strike would therefore affect certain dates. In addition to Labor Day (May 1), May 2 is also a holiday in the Community of Madrid, a bridge that moves many travelers in the capital. The strikes on Thursday and Friday (May 4 and 5) come just before the aforementioned Mother’s Day and the Copa del Rey Final held in Seville.
He Job issue It has aired the spirits between company and workers. The company accuses the unions of an “irresponsible” attitude with the strike, while the workers assure that the proposals of the new collective agreement hide, in reality, a loss of rights of those who enjoy the current agreement.
How can it affect us as travelers?
The decision to call the strike by the Spanish Union of Airline Pilots (Sepla) comes after the company and workers went to the Interconfederal Mediation and Arbitration Service (SIMA) with the aim of reaching an agreement.
From Sepla they defend that the workers demand to recover the loss of purchasing power in recent years and ensure that the company disguises as productivity what is, in reality, a salary review, generating “worse working and salary conditions in the short and medium term”.
As for how it will affect travelers, the strike has been called “in all bases and workplaces in Spain”, so minimum services will have to be established. The bare minimum is to offer connecting flights and one return flight per destination.
In case that our flight is affected, we can claim the refund of the money or request a change of date for it. In the event that the trip is canceled without prior notice, the company will have to take care of the traveler’s maintenance and accommodation if necessary until the next flight where it is possible to relocate us.
In addition, a claim may be imposed on the company for the expenses derived from the trip, such as accommodation or rental services (such as a car). In the case of traveling for work, it is possible to request a receipt certifying that our flight has been cancelled.
