JAKARTA – There are at least three monarchs with the shortest terms in the world. One of them didn’t even last an hour.
The reasons why kings only served briefly were varied. It could be due to sudden death, resignation, annulment by certain authorities, or even overthrow of power.
In its history, several kings in the world have had relatively short tenures. Here’s the review.
List of Kings with the Shortest Term of Office
1. King Louis XIX (France)
King Louis XIX of France is definitely on this list. In history, it was recorded that Louis Antoine alias King Louis XIX had ruled in a very short time.
Let alone for one day, its power only lasts for 20 minutes. Quoting the Guinness World Records website, Louis Antoine ascended the throne in 1830 when he replaced his father.
Prior to this, Louis’ father faced constant pressure and rebellion during his reign. This made him pass the throne to his son, Louis Antoine.
However, things were not much different after Louis ascended the throne. Feeling that it was not the best time to be king, less than half an hour in office, he gave up his newly acquired powers.
2. Dipendra Bir Bikram (Nepal)
Dipendra Bir Bikram was originally the crown prince of Nepal. However, in one incident, he allegedly shot several members of his family, including his own father; King Birendra.
However, after the tragedy, he also aimed his gun with suicidal intent. Not immediately declared dead, Dipendra was in a coma for several days.
The death of the king actually made Dipendra, who had the status of crown prince, ascend the throne. However, three days later he died. In the end, his uncle Gyanendra became the new king of Nepal.
3. Raja Umberto II (Italia)
Umberto II was the son of King Victor Emmanuel III. He ascended the throne to succeed his father on 9 May 1946.
However, King Umberto only had a relatively short reign. Noted, he served until June 12, 1946 or about a month more.
The reason was because at that time Italian citizens held a referendum to determine whether the state would remain a monarchy or become a republic. In this case, the majority voted to form a republic, so Umberto II had to abdicate.
Those are some names of kings with the shortest tenure in the world.
