Much has been said about the impact that the Xbox Game Pass model could have on the industry in the long term. Chris Charla, director of the [email protected] program, thinks there’s no reason to worry, as he doesn’t see the service as a possible threat to the market or anything like that.
During an interview with GamesIndustry, the manager defended the service from the criticism it has received in recent months. He focused on highlighting its benefits and the way in which it benefits both developers and players.

Xbox Game Pass won’t break the industry, according to Charla
From Charla’s perspective, Xbox Game Pass isn’t disruptive, so it won’t radically change the way the industry works. She remembered when everyone was worried about the free-to-play model, because it was thought that no one would buy games in the future.
He noted that such concerns were legitimate and rational, and that Xbox Game Pass is in a similar scenario. “It’s our job in the games industry to take those concerns seriously, think about them, and work together to make the industry work,” Charla said.
The manager confirmed that, after seeing the Xbox Game Pass data, there is no indication that the service will cause a break in the market. On the contrary, he believes that it is an attractive plugin for gamers and developers.
“It’s additive. People still buy a lot of games and they still buy a lot of games on Xbox (…) So I don’t think Game Pass has been a disruptive business model, it’s been additive in a really positive way. And we, as an industry, we need to look at more of those additive business models,” added Charla.
Later, he stated that Xbox Game Pass users have been able to enjoy more titles and discover more genres. He added that these metrics are still around, so that’s a good sign. For this reason, at Xbox they continually work to offer attractive content to subscribers.
On the other hand, he believes that it is also beneficial for developers, as it helps them find the right audiences for their games. So, he sees it as one of the many tools for players to discover titles that are attractive to them.
“We’re seeing Game Pass players play more titles, interact with more games in more genres than they ever have before. Those kinds of metrics are what we saw at the start of Game Pass, and every time we look we still see it. So yes, I’m still very hopeful about it. When we see developers approach us and tell us about the second, third, fourth and fifth game on Game Pass, it’s clearly working for them, “said the manager.
