Do you remember Blockbuster? If your answer was negative, you should know that it is a movie and video game rental chain that was very popular decades ago. However, its glory days are in the past and now it is practically extinct. Will he come back someday? It’s hard to say, but a recent hint gave hope to the most nostalgic users.
What happens is that the rental chain shared a mysterious message through its official website. “We work to rewind your movie”, it is possible to read. This short, cryptic phrase, referencing the classic VHS tapes that were very popular at the turn of the last millennium, was more than enough to get the community excited.

Will Blockbuster return? The movie and video game rental store causes excitement and nostalgia
Blockbuster didn’t reveal any further information, so it’s hard to know for sure the true meaning of the mystery phrase. Does the movie, series and game rental store insinuate that it will return in style? The best thing will be to moderate expectations, since the message has been on the website since at least November 2022, but it was only discovered a couple of days ago.
Earlier this year, the store chain joked about its hypothetical return. In a post on Twitter, he claimed his New Year’s resolution for 2023 was to reopen Blockbuster, but he quit after realizing it was a lot of work. “Should we start going to the gym instead?” he commented with a humorous tone.

Despite the fact that it seems unlikely, nothing prevents the company from returning. Although most of the stores have closed their doors, the chain is still around after being acquired by Dish Network in 2011. Currently, there is one store that remains open in Bend, Oregon, United States.
So it remains to be seen if Blockbuster returns. Should it happen, it will be interesting to find out which business model it will adopt. Will it try to compete directly with Netflix and other streaming platforms? Will it appeal to nostalgia and sell VHS, DVD and Blu-Ray? Only time will tell if and how it will return.

In the meantime, we should remember that Netflix released a comedy series revolving around the rental chain’s last store standing. Of course, the show was an absolute failure on all fronts.
